PoorBest

Nvu is a powerful WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor and web authoring system. It's released under the Mozilla Public Licence so it's 100% open source: free to download (including the source code) and free to use without limitations.

With Nvu you can create websites easily and with no knowledge of HTML.

Nvu Features

  • WYSIWYG Editor. Creating a web page will be no too different than writing a document with a wordprocessor. A graphic interface allows you to easily add text and other page elements (like forms or tables) and change their style and attributes.
  • Multiple Document Views. By clicking tabs at the bottom of the editor window you can switch to the HTML view of the document and make modifications to the page source, see an outline of the page with all HTML tags accessible with a click of the mouse, preview the page in a built-in browser.
  • Table and Form editor. Fill in simple properties dialog boxes and have complex forms and tables automatically added to your pages.
  • Integrated CSS editor. Nvu includes CaScadeS a well know CSS editor. Create and manage your stylesheets easily with instant preview of any change you make to a page element style.
  • Automated Spelling Checker. Misspelled words will be caught and underlined as you type.
  • Integrated FTP. Access and modify files directly on your website with a powerful FTP based file manager.

Nvu is a great tool, ideal for experienced web designers, but also for those who want to learn to create websites without spending money for a commercial web authoring software.

KompoZer

The latest Nvu version is dated 28th June 2005. Since then an unofficial bug-fix version, named KompoZer, has been released by a different development team.

The graphic interface is almost identical in both programs. If you are annoyed by some Nvu bugs, switching to KompoZer won't be difficult and could be a good move.

My Nvu review
In my opinion Nvu is a good WYSISWYG html editor. I'm a professional website designer and I've used this open source software in several projects. Tools like the Table and Form creators are really big time savers and even the integrated FTP works fine.

I'm an experienced web designer, but as far as I can see, Nvu should be a suitable html editor even for people who are still learning web site design: it's an easy to use and feature rich software and the documentation is clear and exhaustive.

Should I point out something I don't like in Nvu, I'd say that CaScadeS (the CSS editor) could be a bit more user friendly, but this is my personal opinion.
Good WYSIWYG html editor
I like what you see is what you get html editors as they allow me to create web pages in a more intuitive manner without having to deal with complicated stuff like html and css syntax. I appreciate Nvu simplicity and easiness of use: creating a table, adding a form, changing font or text color or applying styles to some of my webpage elements are simple operations even for a not very experienced user like me. When I've done my work I can publish it on the web with the integrated ftp program. It couldn't be more simple.

I would be willing to pay some money for a good software like this, but I'm obviously grateful to Nvu developers for distributing this html editor as an open source product.
Kompozer
I was afraid Nvu development was definitively stopped, but fortunately I've found Kompozer. Even if version 0.77 is now almost one year old, this HTML editor is stable and very usable.

The new development team has made a good work and I hope this software can be developed a bit more in the future.
