AbiWord is a word processing program that offers a functionality comparable to MS Word, but completeley free to use.

Here are some notable AbiWord features

  • Advanced document layout: support for tables, bulleted lists, images, styles, footnotes.
  • Multi language support including right to left writings like Arabic or Hebrew. AbiWord's built-in spelling checker comes with 30 dictionaries.
  • Mail Merge function. You can create standard letter templates containing special fields that will be automatically replaced by data coming from a database or a text file.
  • Support for multiple document types. AbiWord can read and write MS Word, OpenOffice.org and WordPerfect documents plus Rich Text Format and HTML files

More features can be added with the use of plug-ins.

AbiWord is small, not too resource intensive and fast. It's an ideal word processing program even for those who don't own a state of the art hardware.

This program is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Different versions exist for MS Windows, Mac OS and Linux operating systems. Source code is also available for download.

Great Open Source
Abiword is a great open source wordprocessor. I've completely replaced MS Word and I'm not missing it!

I've now convinced my boss to use Abiword at work. We need to send a lot of mailing lists and other documentation to our customers and Abiword is perfect for our needs.
Good Support
I'm really satisfied with AbiWord and I want to publicly thank AbiWord developers for helping me to solve a serious issue I've encountered with this software.

I need to write multilingual documents where words in left to right writings (English) and right to left writings (Arabic) are mixed not only in the same document, but also in the same paragraph and even in the same sentence. I noticed that in these circumstances AbiWord was not always able to put in the right order words written in languages with different directionality.

I contacted support, but I was sure this kind of issue wouldn't have been at the top of their priorities.
But they replied back next day confirming a bug in Bi-Directional Multilanguage support and giving me instructions to download a patch that completely corrected this bug.

I think this is a demonstration that people who prefer commercial software to open source because they believe they will receive a better support are often wrong.
